BY THE time Auntie Nora arrived in town, Randy’s mom had been helping him package and ship online orders for nearly two weeks while Max manned the shop downstairs. Of course, Max kissed the ground Lynda walked on for lending a hand. It wasn’t easy for her to work the graveyard shift at the supermarket, grab a few hours of sleep, and then come over and spend half the day working at the antiques shop. Hell, how many mothers would jump so readily into her adult child’s new life with a new man?
Randy hopped up from Max’s sofa when he heard the bells chime on the store door. It could have been anybody—the shop was open, after all—but Randy had a strong connection to his family. He could tell it was them. Taking a deep breath, he gazed at his reflection in the curved black surface of the TV screen. What would Auntie Nora think of him now… as a he? Mom said she’d spoken with Nora about it on the phone, and everything seemed cool, but Randy could never be certain of a person’s acceptance until he looked into her face.
Rushing down the stairs, he arrived in the shop to find two grown women pawing at his boyfriend.
“This is Max,” Randy’s mom told Auntie Nora. “Get a load of these muscles, huh?”
Auntie Nora was already busy squeezing Max’s biceps. “My God! No wonder the kid’s so taken with you. It’s true what they say….”
“Married or gay, I know!” Randy’s mom finished. They weren’t twins, but she and Auntie Nora read each other’s minds just as well. Randy had always loved watching the two sisters bounce off the walls with giddy teases and word play.
Holding Randy’s gaze steadily, Max offered a knowing shrug. “There’s nothing I could do—they came into my shop and started fondling me. Do you think I should call the cops?”
Randy’s mom laughed loudly and gave him a playful smack on the chest while Auntie Nora turned around. When she met Randy’s anxious gaze, time seemed to stop. This was his Auntie, who’d always been Jennifer’s Auntie. Nora’s hazel eyes grew wide behind grown-out bangs and old highlights. Was she really as cool with the transition as Mom claimed? Some might say it didn’t matter what other people thought, but it damn well did! It mattered to Randy.
Releasing Max’s bicep, Auntie Nora stretched her arms out toward Randy. “There you are, kid!” When she pulled him close and hugged the hell out of him, he forgot to feel self-conscious about his chest. It was great to see family again after so long.
Randy hugged her back with all his strength. “Thanks for coming back to the city for Christmas.”
“Of course! Of course!” Pulling back to look at Randy, she placed her hands on his cheeks. With a chuckle, she said, “God, you know, I’m not sure what I was expecting, but you don’t look much different than the last time I saw you.”
Randy’s heart fell into his socks. At least there weren’t any customers around to hear all this.
