FIVE

Shaw

Over the next couple weeks, I found time to talk with most of my roommates.

No one seemed to have a problem with my past, although all of them seemed ready to fight Luka if it came down to it.

Leighton and Ollie were the most supportive—aside from Julian who had become my knight in shining armor even though I didn’t need saving, but it was nice to have a protector all the same.

“Hey, bae,” Leighton said from the doorway of our shared bathroom.

“Christ, Leigh,” I exclaimed, jumping about a foot in the air and nearly wiping out in the shower. “Knock?”

“Sorry,” he said, not sounding at all sorry. “First, you need to hide your new scents before I steal them. Second, where did you get them? They’re fabulous.”

I’d splurged with one of my first paychecks from the health center and gotten a collection of really nice soap, shampoo, lotion, and hair product in an orange cream scent. It maybe wasn’t a typical masculine scent, but I remembered my mom smelling of oranges and the scent was comforting.

“I ordered it online. You can’t have it. Can’t I shower in peace?” I didn’t really mind having Leighton in the bathroom while I showered, but he was fun to tease.

“Can’t have what? Damn, you smell good,” Ollie said, popping in on the impromptu bathroom party.

“Right? I want to share his soap, but he says I can’t,” Leighton said.

“Oh my god, both of you, can you get out? How am I supposed to get ready to go meet LuLu if you’re both pervin’ on me in the shower?” I loved them like the brothers I never had and knew without a doubt the three of us weren’t at all into each other, but I liked to give them a rough time.

It was somewhat overwhelming to me just how quickly I’d grown to love and trust the new men in my life.

“Fine, but hurry up, we need to leave soon,” Ollie said.

I knew he was excited to introduce us to Bash’s aunt, LuLu—who Ollie swore loved him more than Bash and wanted to adopt him.

They left and I finished up, drying off and styling my hair—my head never far from Julian and what a big part of my heart he’d stolen.

I wanted more with him.

And he’d indicated he wanted the same.

But I needed to make sure he knew all of my past before I could jump into anything with him. Maybe it was selfish, but I wanted him to know all the things I’d lost my say in so he’d understand my wants and desires—understand where I was coming from and what I needed to make a relationship successful.

Not that I really had any idea how to make a relationship successful.

But I knew what did not work—Max had shown me that. Not that I’d ever felt an iota of what I felt for Julian with Max.

I knew what my heart longed for.

Julian.

It was as simple as that.

Some would argue I couldn’t trust my heart if it fell for the very first man who showed me any sort of kindness.
