Chapter 8
The Strangest Birthday
In April 1994, twenty-five-year-old Jeannette Renzaho welcomed her third child into the world at their home in Kamonyi, some thirty-seven kilometres southwest of Kigali. Her husband, anxious to meet his newborn daughter, hopped into a Red Cross vehicle and sped over from his business in the capital.
But the barriers on the way were too numerous and he never made it back to his wife. Instead of introducing her girl to her father, Jeannette learned from friends she would not see him again.
“After receiving that news, we all knew what was going to happen,” Jeannette mused. “We were all sure the Tutsis were going to die.”
