To Thallos, and Jack was using the phone camera and Everywhere Key every time he could. It was so much easier.

Cadifer, in his big room with the magician and the baron, obviously was expecting them. Maeffwyn’s dad, Jack noted, was a tiny bit relieved to see his daughter, who now was back in her freshly dry-cleaned riding suit.
Then, as everyone assembled, Jack opened the door. Everywhere Key,

SEND.
And there they were: Sandy and Sunny, exactly as promised. But the smiles on their faces were tight, and their eyes had a harder light to them. Tiny silver shards flashed in Jack’s own eyes, and he knew things were not good. Sunny smiled a genuine smile when he saw Lizzie, but, overall, a sombre air hung over the elves.
Baron Eoghan took control. If an expedition was going into Mystragil, he was going to organise it. He was the one that bore all responsibility if things got out of hand; the Crown would see it no other way.
They all sat around Cadifer’s big round table, and it was obvious someone was missing.
‘Is your lady wife not with us, Daniel?’ he asked.
Daniel shook his head. ‘I’m afraid not. She’s had all the alternate realities she can take for the moment.’ He grinned. ‘Penelope likes things neat and organised, and that includes, apparently, different worlds and the creatures thereupon.’
Baron Eoghan nodded to himself; he could quite understand Penelope’s point of view. He turned to the elves. ‘Right. Master Beech?’
Sandy looked pensive. ‘Let me tell you,’ he began, ‘what’s happening in Silvermount.’ He caught a look from Jack. ‘That’s our town, lad.’ He switched his attention back. ‘The Centauri are up to something. They’ve got a bunch of patrols at the valley bottom and it looks like they’re trying to stop us getting down and havin’ a good look at what they’re up to.
‘Then, there’s something wrong with our shamans. They be tryin’ to auger events, but they can’t see anything. An’ all the while folks is gettin’ nervous. People are sendin’ women and little ’uns to family inland and every man for leagues about has been called in.’
‘How many men?’ Daniel asked, half a second before the Baron could.
‘Oh, I’d say hundreds. More. Maybe two thousand.’
This time Eoghan got in first. ‘And the Centauri? How many are they?’
‘Difficult to tell, that is. Judgin’ by the number of ships in the bay and the size of the town down ther,’ he scratched his chin, ‘I’d say eight, maybe ten thousand. What say you, Sunny?’
The young elf caught a quick look at Lizzie and was pleased to see her give him a tight, secret smile, which he needed, because there hadn’t been much to smile about at home. No-one really knew what the Centauri were up to, or why they were in Mystragil at all. They were definitely up to no good, but just what sort of ‘no good’ was anyone and everyone’s guess.
‘Aye, Uncle Sandy. I reckon that’s about right. I’d been sent to watch them for a while now, from high upslope and around the bay.
