Payton Galendez watched the manhunter ride for the edge of his property. Christ, last thing he needed was one of his mistakes showing up out of the blue. Bad enough that Barton woman had taken a fool notion to hire a goddamned killer to go after his son. He should have realized the woman had too much spunk. She’d stood up to damn near a whole town and accused Ty of misdeed, despite the town being in Galendez’s pocket. He might have admired her for that under different circumstances, but he simply couldn’t let her ruin his reputation and risk the business. Bad enough Ty had done that on his own, and was still doing it, though he thought his addled pa didn’t know what was going on. Did he really think his father was that stupid? Payton Galendez hadn’t built an empire by shutting his eyes. He knew damn well what Ty was up to and as long as the boy didn’t get caught he’d let him keep at it. Business was business, after all, no matter how one acquired it.

Crazy sonofabitch boy. He was too much like his old man, that was the problem. He made the same mistakes, couldn’t keep his hands of the women. But one thing his son didn’t have from his father—the ability to clean up the messes he made.

Payton Galendez had ridden away from his problems years ago, paid off his son’s when necessary. Ty would likely get his fool hide killed one of these days. The boy had no head on his shoulders when it came to self-preservation.

And Jep...Jep was too damned honest for his own good, for the family’s own good. Where the hell had he gone wrong with that one?

A sound brought him from his thoughts. He turned to see Lacy standing in the entry, leaning against the jamb, smoking a cigarette. The little killer’s face had a peculiar look and Galendez wondered just how long he’d been lurking beyond the doorway. Had he overheard any of the conversation with Deletéreo?

Payton’s face colored. “What the hell are you doing in here so early?”

“I’m a light sleeper, Galendez. I see we had company.”

“You use the word we a bit too loosely. I don’t like it. This is my home. You are a guest here.” Payton’s tone grew harder. He was getting damned sick of that little bastard. It had been a mistake hiring him.

“I ain’t concerned with what you like, Payton. I’m only concerned with doing my job.”

“Seems you got a false impression of just what that job entails. I told you not to hurt the Barton woman, just scare her. Jep tells me you beat on her.”

Lacy’s cold eyes glittered, their expression unreadable. “Wasn’t my fault. She damn near scratched my face off. She’s a danger. Just like that manhunter. They should both be taken care of.”

Payton’s eyes narrowed. “If by ‘taken care of’ you mean killing...”

“Dead men don’t talk. They don’t pose a threat, either.”

“I told you no killing and I meant it.
