Chapter Eight

Sam sat in his cruiser, upset he hadn’t told Joey the truth. He’d kept the details of the dumped body to himself, figuring that now wasn’t the time to share that Greeve was the dead guy. Someone had worked him over, and good, but according to the coroner, the cause of death was a heart attack. He could see it happening. The man wasn’t the poster boy for good health weekly, then add in some severe stressors—knives, iron knuckles, and tire irons—and his heart was bound to give out.

After he and Finn had come back from Joey’s apartment, Sam had given the crew a heads-up in case there was any blowback from Greeve. Though he didn’t like a murder in his sector, Sam couldn’t say he was sorry the asshole was dead.

Sam cracked the driver’s side window of his cruiser to let in the cool night air. So far, Ross hadn’t been able to dig up any leads on the Greeve murder. For all Sam knew the death was caused by a deal gone wrong. Hell, maybe he owed someone money, or the tenants banded together to get rid of the POS. All were possible scenarios. However, Sam wasn’t buying any of them, and neither was Detective Ross.

The two of them had an early morning meeting with the captain after the body was extricated from a Dumpster in an alley behind an old diner. Ross had been assigned to the case, and when he realized Greeve was the same man Sam had paid a visit to the previous afternoon, he’d called Sam in. The three of them had spent some time going over what they knew. Other than a rumor that Bishop Venzezo, the local mob boss, was responsible, they had nothing to go on. Ross couldn’t arrest someone on hearsay. They needed substantial evidence. Especially when it came to Venzezo, the slippery bastard. Over a dozen arrests and none of them ever got to the charging stage. To take down a mob boss, the evidence had to be airtight and considerable.

Ross was professionally and personally driven to find something that pointed at Bishop, but as of yet, nothing. Ross and his partner James were involved in a case not too long ago that included Avante, one of Bishop’s associates, who was responsible for the detective ending up in the hospital.

The moment the captain heard Bishop’s name, he assigned two more detectives to the case. Anything involving that psycho Venzezo demanded all hands on deck. There were few photos of Venzezo, and what they had on file were blurry, a side view, or too far away to make a positive ID. The man wanted to remain a ghost and, for the most part, was succeeding.

Sam tried but couldn’t shake the feeling that Greeve’s death had something to do with their visit to pick up Joey’s belongings. He didn’t have a stitch of proof, but his instincts had him double-checking his mirrors as he drove down South Broadway. Sure enough,
