“Coach… What’s Coach Alan’s deal?”

She sets her palms on the table. The cheerleading coach drums her fingers on the desk. “What do you know about Coach Alan,” she says carefully.

I shrug. “He’s the football coach… And I guess he kind of hates cheerleaders?”

She shakes her head, but I see the small smile on her face. “He doesn’t hate cheerleaders. Just our cheerleaders. Coach Alan was an assistant coach in the NFL for a few years before he came here. School was all hyped to get him; he all but promised us a division championship, and so they promised him whatever he wanted. Big office, huge paycheck, run the team however he likes. Alan recruited several of the players himself.” She pauses, looking up at me. “Kyle included.”
