Jed

After he dropped Mercedes off at her publisher’s office, he headed into the firm. Jed sat behind his father’s big desk, wondering what his next move should be. If he closed the firm, so many people would be out of jobs, he’d feel awful, but finding a like-minded partner was proving to be damn near impossible.

“Hello,” a man called from the reception area. “Is anyone here?” Jed wanted to shout back that they were closed, but what if it was someone who needed his help? Hadn’t he just told Mercedes that he wanted to keep the firm open to help people?

“Back here,” he shouted. A young man walked into his father’s office wearing a full three-piece business suit and the shiniest shoes that Jed had ever seen. Yeah, he was pretty sure that this guy didn’t need his help but was there to interview for the position that Jed had posted online.

“Can I help you?” he asked.

“Um, yes,” the guy said. “At least, I hope that you can. I got this from my father’s lawyer,” he said, crossing the room to hand an envelope to Jed. “I think that it might interest you.”

“So, you’re not here about the job then?” Jed asked. He was almost disappointed to hear that since the guy was his first real prospect in almost two days.

“Job?” the guy asked. Jed pulled the papers out of the manila envelope and quickly looked them over. “Your name is Andrew Wild?” he asked.

“It is,” the man breathed. Jed had a sinking feeling that was quickly turning into a giant knot in his tummy. He continued to read the document that said that Andrew Wild’s father had left him half of a firm—and if Jed wasn’t mistaken, it was his firm that Andrew was entitled to half of.

“What the fuck is this?” Jed spat, tossing the papers down to his desk.

“The short of it is, we share a father. I never knew that you or someone named Grizz existed until dad died, and now, his lawyer has shown up at my apartment to rock my world. Apparently, your dad—we’ll our dad, has kept me and my mother a secret from you and your brother. Dad left his half of the company to me, and according to his lawyer, he left everything he had to me. I’m sorry.”

Jed stood from behind his father’s chair and faced down his supposed half-brother. “You didn’t know about me or Grizz until when, exactly?” he asked.

“Until yesterday when Dad’s lawyer showed up at my place and gave me those papers. I wasn’t sure what was going on. Dad never told me about you or your brother. I had no idea that I wasn’t an only child.”

“Are you a lawyer?” Jed asked.

“I am,” Andrew said. “I just passed the bar and I work for a small firm across town. Maybe you’ve heard of them—Dooley and Michaels.”

“Yeah, I’ve heard of them. They’re a decent firm. Listen, it’s not that I don’t believe you, Andrew,” Jed started.

“Please, call me Drew,” he insisted.
