They Say It’s Your Birthday?

“Happy Birthday Jasper!” went up a rousing chorus by family and friends gathered for Jasper’s big thirteenth birthday.

Grandpa started the Happy Birthday song with his trademarked, “A one-a and-a two-a and-a” in the way that some old television personality used to do it with an Italian accent. His girl cousin Nyla slugged him in the arm as hard as she could, which was pretty hard and left a bruise. Jasper’s uncle told him that he needed a razor to start shaving.

Donny, Roger, and Jude were running around chasing Jasper and trying to spray him with silly string. “You’re cleaning up that mess guys!” Mr. Davy called after them.

After cake and ice cream and a hot afternoon in the middle of May, Jasper opened up his presents. He got the usual assortment of clothes from Grandparents, cash from others. From his other Grandparents (his mom’s mom and second husband), he got a very nice drone which he promptly opened and began flying into people and crashing into the walls.

Mom and Dad got him socks. They also got him a present he’d been bugging them for since before Spring Break: a Galaxy s7 phone.

Of course, he immediately took it out and began playing around with it. His friends were duly impressed. “Dude! That’s so cool!” shouted Donny – all buzzed from too much sugar all day.

The group of boys ran around the yard whooping and hollering. “I guess he liked the phone,” laughed Grandpa as the family settled in to talk about the election.

Thirteen was a significant age in the SSP. At the ICC bases, at thirteen, you would be looking towards an arranged marriage and very soon, having kids. For the SSP, it meant a time to sign a contract of intent. The intention stated your allegiance to the program until your sixteenth birthday, where special cases could be made to go all in, in the 20-and-back program.

Jasper had barely let the cake digest and learned to program his s7 when he was back at the Seal. In a private room Lt. Bergman, Sgt. Commander Locke and Lt. Colonel Horton joined Jasper and Johnny “Be” Goode to wish him a happy birthday. Thirteen is a big birthday my friend, here’s a cupcake to welcome you here!” wished a buoyant Lt. Colonel Horton to Jasper. The Lt. Colonel had a big buoyant, round face and a short-cropped military crew cut. He had a stout chin and could show a big smile or turn his frown on you and you didn’t want to cross him. But around Jasper today, it was all smiles. He could be your best friend or worse enemy.

Jasper enjoyed the moment and the team was reliving some of the adventures they’d had together. After a short while, the Lt. Colonel stood up and motioned to clear Lt. Bergman and Johnny out of the room. “Ok, now for the big reveal,” he said.

When the other two were out of the room, he turned more seriously to Sgt.
