Free and Skye were led into the camp, prisoners themselves now. They watched the half dozen male convicts rampaging through the grounds. They broke into every cabin, beginning with Skye's, and all the way up the line.
Anyar heard the commotion and came out to see what was going on. As she tried to retreat, one of the men dragged her out. Herbert was also dragged out of his cabin by his hair, kicking and screaming.
The Store was attacked, and the prisoners hauled out into the open bins and pails of food, eating some of what should be cooked uncooked in their haste to "Party!" as Viper yelled over and over. They'd found the cases of wine and had the bottles open and the liquid pouring down their throats even before Free and Skye and their guards made it to the center of the campgrounds.
Lynda and Brad had been in the Lab, which was invaded quickly. Free heard Lynda screaming, and didn't want to imagine what was happening to her.
Once everyone in the project had been dragged onto the road, Free and Skye were tossed into the ring with the others, surrounded by the men eating, drinking, yelling, shoving, laughing, tearing at the velvet dress Lynda wore, touching both Anyar and Herbert in inappropriate places. And Skye. Beautiful Skye was the focus of so much loutish attention, and Free tried to protect her by shoving hands away from her. For his efforts he was punched in the eye, knocking him on his ass.
Finally, a blast filled the air, then another, ear splitting, and Free looked up to see the one named JJ holding something metallic that had a puff of smoke coming from one end. "Listen up, assholes!" he said.
Skye crouched next to Free, holding onto him for protection he couldn't provide. "What is that?" she whispered in a trembling voice.
"It's a, uh, gun..." Herbert said in his own quivering voice. "A relic from, um, a thousand years ago.
"What does it do?" Skye asked fearfully. "Besides deafen you?"
"It... kills people with metal bits."
"We're free!" JJ said, and made the long metal weapon fire again, shooting something into the air. The sound caused Skye to put her hands over her ears and when she took them away her ears rang.
The male and female prisoners yelled and screamed and jumped into the air. Some of the men, including Viper, kicked over anything nearby and threw things around.
Free and his team members cowered and quivered. None of them, in all their young lives, had encountered anything so base and crude as what was happening to them now.
"We're free, and I'm still your leader!" JJ announced, firing that damned weapon yet again.
All of the convicts cheered, although Free noticed that Viper didn't cheer quite as loudly, nor did the woman named Blister. He saw them glance at one another.
"That means I make the rules," JJ said.
"Yeah! You done good by us so far," one of the men yelled, and the others shouted approval.
"Right now, we got ourselves some hostages.
