Eulalie sat alone, picking at the food on the tray. Too tired to eat downstairs, she had asked for food to be sent up to the room. No doubt Florilla and Robert were at the dining table, discussing what was to be done with Neijee. He had not allowed her to have a part in the discussion, just as she had had no say as to whether she wanted to be sent to Taborville to teach the children.

How would she be able to stand it? Apart from Jason and Neijee? She knew now that Robert would not allow her to take Jason with her. The mill children would be a reminder every day of her loss.

Wearily she put on her nightgown and climbed into bed. When Robert came in, she was asleep.

Walking to the bed, he held the candle high and peered into Eulalie's tear-stained face, her eyes shuttered by dark, long lashes, and her hand stretched out in silent supplication. He drew in his breath at her beauty and her vulnerability. God—how she had turned him into jelly when she had looked into his eyes, begging him for compassion, not for herself, but for the two children whom she loved. It was all he could do not to give way to her and grant her anything she wished.

Not wanting to disturb her after her long, hard day, Robert blew out the candle and climbed into the other bed for the night.
