Chapter Twenty-Eight
Jamieson
The next morning, I went in the back way of the hospital to avoid seeing Grace. It was eventually inevitable that we were going to run into each other, especially when she needed a consult on a patient. I just prayed that wasnât today. I had just finished my morning rounds when my pager went off and I was needed down in the ER. That sure as hell didnât last long.
âSomeone paged me?â I walked into trauma room two and saw Grace standing over a patient.
âI did,â she spoke without looking at me. âPatient was hit by a truck walking across the street. She has massive internal bleeding and a skull fracture. Her heart stopped, but I was able to revive her.â
I walked over to the patient and checked her eyes with my light.
âHer pupils arenât responding and there is no corneal reflex. Iâm sorry, Dr. Harper, your patient is brain dead,â I spoke as I stared into her eyes. âYou need to prepare the family.â I walked out of the room.
As I was walking to the elevator, I noticed some of the nurses and some of the doctors staring at me. My pager went off. Renata needed to see me stat. I took the elevator up to her office and lightly knocked on the door.
âYou needed to see me?â
âYes, come in, Dr. Finn, and have a seat. How did your presentation go?â
âIt went good.â
âAnd Dr. Harperâs?â
âShe did great. Is this what was so urgent?â
âRenata, you neededââ Grace stopped speaking when she saw me.
âCome in and have a seat. I need to speak with both of you. Thereâs a rumor going around this hospital that the two of you got married while you were in Las Vegas.â
âWho would say that?â I nervously asked.
âApparently, someone in this hospital, and Iâm not naming names, was in Vegas, in the elevator with the two of you. This person overheard you say, âWeâll call my attorney and see how quickly we can get this marriage annulled.â This person also said that the two of you looked panicked. So, you two better come clean now!â she spoke through gritted teeth.
âShit.â I placed my hand over my face.
âDid you just say âshit,â Dr. Finn?â
âItâs true,â Grace spoke in calm soft voice. âDr. Finn and I did get married in Las Vegas, but it was a mistake and weâre having it annulled as quickly as possible. We were drunk.â
âDrunk? You were drunk?â she voiced loudly. âSo it isnât just a rumor, then?â
âNo, Renata, itâs not,â Grace replied.
âAnd you!â She pointed at me. âWhat the hell did I tell you?â
âIt happened,â I voiced loudly. âWe were heavily intoxicated and didnât know what we were doing. We are getting it taken care of immediately. No one was supposed to ever know. Shit.â
âShit is right. Now the whole hospital is talking, so expect some backlash, Dr. Finn, from all the heartbroken nurses who wanted more from you.â
âAre we done here?â I got up from my seat. âI have an aneurysm I need to clip.
