Aunt Cara
Aunt Cara was more like a sister to me. I could tell her anything. And it would never get back to my parents. I remember the first time that Mark hit me. I couldn’t go home. So I called Aunt Cara and she covered for me. Saying she wanted to keep me for the week to help her prepare food and clean up. Thank God it was the summer. And close to our Reunion. So nothing seemed out of place.
“Nena you have to leave him alone. He is going to kill you one day.”
“Tia, no he won’t. He was just mad because someone stole money from him. And I shouldn’t have said something to him.”
“Don’t you start making excuses for him. You will end up doing it for the rest of your life.”
“Tia, I know he has a temper. I just have to stop making him mad.”
“Jalisa no matter what. You come to me for everything.”
“I will Tia.”
We began to start cleaning and seasoning food. Our family reunion was a big thing. There was so much food to prepare.
Cochifritos, Paella, Ropa Viejas, Empanada, Pernil, Black beans and rice, Red beans and rice, Arepas, Kipes, Chicharron, Yucca con cebolla to name a few things. I’m making y’all hungry I bet.
Anyway. The day that I found out that I was pregnant. I went to Aunt Cara and she knew exactly what to do.
“Nena, first things first, I am glad that you came to me.”
“Tia, I am so scared.”
“Well Nena, we have to get you to the doctor. Then find out how far along you are. Then schedule an appointment. You do want to get rid of it right?”
“Yes Tia. After the way Mark acted, I don’t want anything to do with him.”
“I hope so Nena.”
“Tia, I can’t believe that we have been together this long and he would act like this.”
“Nena, you have to realize there are different men in this world. Some are good and some are bad.”
“So are you saying that Mark is one of the bad guys?”
“Nena, I don’t know him. He could be a good one, or he could be a bad one. But from what I am seeing, he is a bad one to me.”
“I believe it too, Tia. But how do I turn my back on him? He wants to go back to school and get his diploma and eventually his degree.”
“Nena, you have to think about you. You should always come first in everything that you do.”
“Yes Tia, I am thinking about it right now. I know that I cannot keep this baby.”
“Ok Nena, get some sleep and in the morning we will go.”
“Thanks Tia. I will try. And thank you for always being there for me.”
The next morning we left to go to the abortion clinic in Queens. Since there was an adult with me, they didn’t ask for my parent’s consent.
“Jalisa Delgado?”
“That’s me.”
“Can you follow me, please?”
I followed the nurse to the exam room. Tia held my hand all the way. She knew I was scared.
