She was his everything in those precious hours he had to dream. He could smell her, taste her, nigh unto feel her. Like a phantom just out of arm’s reach, she promised him happiness, an end to the stark loneliness…then disappointed him with her nonexistence every eve when he awoke.

He wanted to die—the one thing he could not do.

Other than servants and the occasional paid whore, Dario had no contact with people, except for those he drank of. Years pressed on and the outside world slowly changed with the passage of time. It became neither better nor worse, only different.

And still, she was there, smiling that dimpled smile whilst he slumbered, tempting him with her feminine beauty and carnal allure. Dario ached to hold her, to breathe in her scent, to sink his cock deep inside her.

She wasn’t real. She would never be real.

Isabella had once spoken to him of destiny. Dario didn’t need a fortune-teller to understand his.

He had been cursed to walk alone. He was a shadow in alleyways during the darkest nights.
