Once again. Mariah found herself stumbling through the bush with poor visibility, only this time it was not quite so arduous as the night before. Following a less than restful night, she left the women’s camp at first light to get help for Miriam, but for this trip, she at least now had food in her stomach, making the going a little easier. The air was cool, and there was a faint mist drifting through the trees, but she felt she was making good time. It was imperative, for Miriam’s sake.

Mariah had insisted on seeking help despite the women’s protests, particularly Meg’s, and reasoned that Zac, the sealer, must know all about snakebites and might be able to save Miriam. The women had been divided as to what to do. Some agreed with Mariah, but the remainder saw it as a threat to their freedom, and no matter how convincing her arguments, they still didn’t agree. They argued the pros and cons for most of the night and were still debating the issue when Mariah decided to take the matter into her own hands. As the sky began to turn from black to pale grey, she took her leave, saying she would return with help as soon as possible.

Much to her surprise, no one tried to stop her. Quite possibly their consciences had finally got the better of them, but she could not help wondering if they would still be there when she returned. Miriam was definitely too ill to move, and there was nothing holding the others there, aside from the moral obligation. which apparently was causing them some conflicts. Perhaps they would all remain, but Mariah thought it more likely that two would go into hiding immediately, namely Meg and Lilian, quickly followed by the others once the fear of being captured got the better of them. Mariah just hoped that someone would stay with Miriam until help arrived. In her heart, she believed that not all of them would desert someone in need, and she held on to that ideal—because if Miriam was left alone, Mariah’s mercy dash could prove futile.

There was a thick mist hovering over the lake, and as she darted in and out of the trees along the eastern shore, her thoughts again returned to Thomas. Instantly she felt heartsick. It would be impossible to avoid him on her return, so she would have to face him whether she liked it or not. For a moment she felt like stopping, and her pace slowed automatically, but it would be unfair to let her own personal feelings hinder the purpose of the mission in any way. Consciously, but reluctantly, she regained her former speed, determined not to dwell on Thomas for the remainder of the journey. Why should she waste her thoughts on him when he had treated her so poorly? What an idiot she had been to allow herself to be deceived by Thomas’ sweet talk. She should have known better, but perhaps in her naivety she had unwittingly set herself up for such treatment.
