Chapter Twelve

Samantha

“I’m so glad we’re all here,” Elle gushed.

Seven of us sat around a table at a local bar. Dark wood, dim lighting, candles flickering on the tables in small green vases. Elle leaned towards me in a low-cut, plum-colored top that clashed brilliantly with her bright orange hair. Next to her, Chris was slouched back, playing on his phone and looking bored. Ryan was on his other side, silent as always, and Brendan and Nora were across the table, shoulders touching, smiling at Vin and me.

“So this is a bar.” Vin’s tone was contemplative, almost scientific, as she examined the dark wood tables, the bartender at the counter, and the many televisions tuned to football.

“Is it what you thought it’d be like?” Nora asked.

“Maybe?” Vin tilted her head.

A deep voice came behind me. “It’s pretty much like any other establishment.”

I inhaled.

Zach had arrived and was grabbing a seat next to Ryan. He was wearing a brown-and-red flannel and black jeans that made me squirm in memory of his strong body. “Only the guys are bigger assholes and the nachos are bigger disappointments,” he added.

He didn’t look at me, and I could barely look him in the face. We hadn’t seen each other since yesterday morning, not since he’d come for his massage and gotten more than either of us had expected.

“There are certainly more assholes now that you’ve shown up,” Nora replied, taking a sip from a blood-red drink in a martini glass.

Brendan laughed, Elle giggled, and Chris, still absorbed in his phone, gave a half-smile that showed he wasn’t totally tuning us out.

“Hey, it takes one to know one,” Zach responded, and for the briefest second caught my eye.

I bit my lip and looked away, feeling blood rush to my cheeks. At least it’d match the bright red shirt I wore, the one with the draped front that clung to my waist. The one that I’d tried not to consider what Zach would think about it when I’d decided on it.

“Are you ready to get drunk?” Elle asked Vin, a gleam in her eye.

“I suppose so…”

This was our mission tonight: get Vin drunk, and get Vin some experience to prepare for all the dates she’d be having. Minus a liplock to help a fellow actor rehearse last fall, she’d never actually kissed a guy. In addition to Elle inviting me out with the group, Vin had personally asked me to come for moral support. Then Nora, who I knew mostly through Brendan, had called herself to make sure I’d be there for some reason. If it weren’t for all these promises I’d made—especially to Vin—I might’ve skipped out. Facing Zach again without a costume made me want to slide underneath the table and not come out until he was gone.

I didn’t know what had come over me yesterday, and I’d spent last night tossing and turning, questioning why I’d kept touching him—and sometimes wondering what would’ve happened if I’d gone further like I’d wanted to.

Elle ordered us a
