Jackson

I'm surprised to see all the lights on in Alec's house. Usually, people turned everything off when they left. Unless he didn't bother because he didn't plan on being gone long. Instead of questioning him about it, I quietly follow him into his room, taking in the neutral color scheme he has going on. The white curtains match the white bedspread, and both perfectly complement the light wood furniture in the room.

I'm taken aback when he opens the closet and his wardrobe doesn't lack color the way his house does. Being the curious man I am, I rummage around his room while he's packing a bag. I open his nightstand drawers and pause when my eyes land on an impressive collection of sex toys all neatly laid out in various rows.

Smiling wide, I pick up a large butt plug and walk over to where he is looking through his bathroom cabinets. “I think you should include this as well.”

Collecting a few toiletries in his hands, he stands up and blushes when he realizes what's in my hand. The bottles he’s holding crash to the floor and he yanks the purple silicone toy free from my fingers. “Can you please not touch my things? You don't see me snooping through your house.”

“That's because it's hard to do when the only time I leave you alone is when you're handcuffed to the bed.”

He sneers, shoving the butt plug in his back pocket before bending down to collect everything scattered on the beige tile.

“So you agree we should bring it with us then?”

Groaning, he stomps into the bedroom and adds his bathroom items to a side pocket of his bag, avoiding my question. Us leaving the house without him ever putting the toy back in his drawer is a good enough answer for me. We get back in the car after tossing his belongings in the trunk and head back to my house.

On the way there, I can't stop the questions in my head from coming out of my mouth. “Why didn't you turn the lights off in your house? You have no idea when you'll get back.”

He shrugs, tugging on the seat belt. I didn’t cuff him when leaving the bakery or leaving his place either. It doesn't feel needed anymore. When it is, I'm sure he'll let me know. Staring down at his bouncing knees, he avoids meeting my gaze. “I don't like walking into a dark house if I can help it.”

“That's why you turn on the lights on your way inside,” I say, turning into my neighborhood.

He shakes his head. “I like them to already be on. I don't question why you do everything you do.”

“Except you kind of do.” I smirk his way and he finally looks at me, sighing.

“I don't know why I do it, okay? It makes me feel safer.”

I rest my hand on his the same way he did when I needed help settling on the inside. “From what?”

“From the dark. I've never liked it.”

I nod in understanding.
