After a morning on the slopes, during which Ty tried and failed to keep up with her brother, she and Reed drove to a large roadside Christmas Tree stand on the far side of town. As soon as she opened the car door, Tyâs nose twitched at the sweet smell of evergreens. It triggered a range of emotions. Nostalgia and sorrow for Christmases past, along with hope and happiness for the Christmas she was about to share with her brother and sister-in-law.
âDo you think they have any Douglas firs?â Reed asked as they meandered through the tidy rows of trees perched on crude wooden stands.
âGosh, I donât know,â Ty replied, âbut I sure hope so.â Growing up, theyâd always gone out as a family and cut down a Douglas fir at the Christmas tree farm in the neighboring town.
âHey, Ty,â a male voice said.
Ty looked up and saw Scotty, her realtor, poking through a row of trees. âHey, Scotty.â
Scotty and his husband James stepped out from behind a massive Fraser fir. âFancy meeting you here.â
Ty rested a hand on her brotherâs shoulder. âThis is my brother, Reed. Reed, these are my friends Scotty and James. Theyâre the ones who lent you the ski clothes.â
Reed shook their hands and said, âThanks so much for the snazzy outfits. It saved me a bundle not to have to rent everything, and Iâve never looked so good.â
âDo you guys want to stop by the house tomorrow for a Christmas drink?â Ty asked.
âWeâd love to,â Scotty replied.
After Scotty and James wandered off, Reed tugged on the limb of a tall, plump tree. âHow about this one?â He checked its tag. âItâs a Douglas fir.â
Ty stood back and examined it. The tree was almost perfectly symmetrical. âCan you turn it so I can see the back?â
Reed did as she asked.
âItâs perfect,â Ty said. âI donât see any bare areas.â
Ty paid for the tree while Reed and one of the standâs employees used hairy brown twine to tie it to the roof of her Tesla.
âDo you want a wreath?â the cashier asked.
Ty eyed the vast array of wreaths tethered to the wire fence behind her. She pointed to a medium-sized one with a simple red velvet bow. âIâll take that one.â
