During their time watching Millers Court Stephen stated that they saw no sign of Mary Kelly throughout their observations outside of her room. Stephen did not know at what time they commenced their observations, or when they finished, or why they were keeping observations on that particular night. The man they identified as entering and leaving Kelly`s room was The Reverend Samuel Barnett.

On seeing the Reverend Barnett enter Kelly’s room, John McCarthy is alleged to have waited, and then gone to the front window of her room, which had a broken pane of glass, and pulled the covering back and saw Barnett having sexual intercourse with Kelly. He returned back to his observation point and along with the others witnessed the same male leaving her room at an unknown time. As stated above they never saw Kelly enter or leave her room at any time during the evening. This is a contentious issue, as there is other evidence to the contrary, which I will discuss in due course.

The following morning McCarthy instructed Bowyer to go to Mary Kelly’s room and to try to obtain rent money as she was 29 shillings in arrears, knowing that she may well have money from the previous night from servicing at least one client. However, these actions of McCarthy seem inconsequential having regard to the fact that a prostitute in 1888 would have had only charged four pence, or a maximum of six pence for her services, which in the case of Kelly’s arrears would have been well short of the 29 shillings she owed in back rent. I also have to ask why a landlord would allow a tenant to become that much in arrears, those arrears in this case being a considerable number of weeks outstanding rent. McCarthy would later answer this at the inquest by saying that it was case of get the arrears money when you can!

Stephen also indicated that he was in possession of what he suggests is the only known photograph of Mary Kelly in existence. This photograph, he stated had been taken possession of by Jack McCarthy when clearing out Kelly’s room after her murder. One burning question with regards to the photograph is why would Mary Kelly have a photo of herself on display? I can see the logic in having a photo of her mother, or a sister, but I find it strange why she would have one of herself. I did ask to see the photo but Stephen declined my request. It should also be noted that Inspector Abberline made an inventory of Kelly's room and makes no mention of a photograph.

My first obvious question to Stephen was why did Jack McCarthy not report this important evidence to the police at the time, or at any time at thereafter? Stephen stated that following the identification of who they believed to have been killer of Kelly, McCarthy became embroiled in a conspiracy orchestrated by a high ranking government official Sir Edward Jenkinson to hide the identity of the killer.
