“We need to run, Pardee. It’s over.” Aaron DuBois was on his haunches in a stand of sagebrush about a mile from the AuAg Mine, built with his mining expertise and Pardee’s political and economic help. DuBois was a rich man by any standard and could see it all disappearing into the thin atmosphere of Nevada’s high deserts.

“I’m for taking as much gold as a pack horse or two can carry and riding south. OK Reynolds will be coming with warrants in hand in hours, Lucas.”

“I’m not giving up what I’ve built. I still own those county commissioners, DuBois. They will do as I say. Justice of the Peace Pence still works for me. He won’t be issuing any warrants unless I tell him to. No, DuBois, I’m not running, I’m fighting.”

DuBois looked at the man and shook his head slowly. He knew the state investigator wasn’t going to mess around with the county justice of the peace. He’d go straight to district court, and Pardee surely didn’t own District Judge Herman Beatty. No one owned him except Lady Justice. “If you don’t pack it up and skedaddle, Pardee, you’ll be in jail or worse by sunset,” DuBois said. “I’ll be on a south trail in two hours or less.”

“I can’t help you if you run off, DuBois.”

“Right now, Pardee, you can’t help yourself,” he answered. He stood up, mounted his horse, and rode off toward the mine and his elegant home. He did exactly as he’d said, packing two large mules with as much gold as they could carry. He had a third mule packed with essentials for a long trail ride to Mexico.

Before he left, he changed from his normal formal dress to buckskins, cut his long hair almost to the skin, and shaved his rather distinguished mustache. He made a long looping ride around Elko and took the west road to Carlin before turning south. His plan was to ride right through Eureka and east to the four corners before turning south again. “If I’m not spotted in three days, I’ll be safe. South to Pioche, and after that, desert, and then Mexico.”
