Three-toes Jacobs didnât ride into Elko. He went east instead, to Wilsonâs feedlot to tell the boss what had happened. He rode straight through and was exhausted when he finally walked into the office of the feedlot. Blake Wilson heard him ride in and was at door.
Three-toes flopped down in a chair. âWarren killed one of his own hands,â he wheezed. âOthers have run off. Our people are scattered, Mr. Wilson. The few we have left.â
âSlow down, Three-toes. Tell me what happened.â Blake Wilson wasnât ready for more bad news. âWere our men involved? I have been against this marriage with Warren from the beginning.â
âWarren went nuts when he found out one of his hands, not one of our people, had left him. He horse whipped the man, Blake, drew blood from the manâs face with that quirt of his, and then shot him dead. Now, the sheriff is involved.â
âHow did the sheriff get involved if it happened on the Warren ranch?â
âOld Winters shot Warren before he died, the doc came out, and then the Skelton deputy. Warrenâs men probably told him what happened.â
âI never did like Sonny Belafleurâs idea of mingling our people with a rancherâs. We will have to let the law take its course, Three-toes. Let Amos Warren hang for murder and probably have his ranch sold out from under him beforehand. Thatâs his problem, not mine.â Blake Wilson paced around the great room trying to put this new wrinkle into place. âYou said you were sent to fetch hands?â Three-toes nodded.
âThen, go back to the ranch without any extra hands, tell him whatever you want. Weâre finished with Amos Warren, but itâs important that you get our people out of there. Tell whatâs left of our crew to ride to Elko and weâll get word to them. For godâs sake, donât bring âem here.â
He paced around the generous office, stopped twice to look out the window at the almost empty feed pens, and knew this would not just blow over. âWe have got to disassociate from Warren,â he snarled. He was more talking to himself than to Three-toes. âSheriff will swarm all over that ranch.â He looked at Three-toes. âYou buried the body under a trash pile? Any way you could get it out of there before the sheriffâs people find it?â
âThe deputy I talked to leaving out seemed to know that someone was killed. Donât have any idea what Warren might have said, though. I canât get back to the ranch until late tomorrow at the best, Mr. Wilson. Maybe I can find Odie and Skinny and get some help.â
âSkinnyâs busy right now, Three-toes, and Odie Jackson is no longer part of the organization.â Three-toes couldnât believe that. He just stood in the middle of the room, shaking his head. âYou and Louie Bloom are the only ones left at the Warren place. Do your best, but try not to get involved if the sheriffâs people are already on the job.â He continued pacing around as Three-toes made his way out.
