CHAPTER 29

Henry didn’t believe in fate. To him, it was up there with soul mates and true love and the Tooth Fairy. From an early age, he wouldn’t accept that anyone or anything was in control of his life, other than himself. As such, he’d refused to read books or watch films which even hinted at any form of destiny. But at that moment, it was hard to believe there wasn’t some higher force intervening.

Fleur had been playing on his mind all week. He’d thought back to that first meeting in the pharmacy and then the way he’d treated her when Eunice insisted he drove her home from the Book Club. Mainly, though, he’d remembered her reaction to hearing about Eunice’s diabetes.

“Why did you say anything? I don’t want other people knowing my business,” Eunice had scolded when Henry had returned from apologising to Fleur the previous Sunday. “You knew I didn’t want her told about that.”

“It’s not a big deal,” he’d replied. “And she wouldn’t believe my apology was genuine unless I explained. Besides, you don’t need to worry. She’s not going to tell anyone else. And I trust her.”

And that was it. That was the other reason he couldn’t get her out of his mind. Even now, he could recall with perfect clarity that look of deep, unwavering sympathy she had given him. As if she had truly understood the constant worry that afflicted his daily life. She hadn’t said anything, but maybe that was why he knew she understood, because she hadn’t felt the need to pry or prod or load him with false condolences. Instead, she’d looked at him as though she’d wanted to take his hand, and surprisingly, he had wanted her to. He had actually wanted to take her hand, look into her eyes and promise her he would do better in the future. But before he could even attempt any of that, her sister had returned from the kitchen, and the moment was gone. But since then, he hadn’t been able to stop thinking about it.

He was still thinking about that moment, and Fleur, as he was driving home from court when his mind should have been on all the upcoming cases he had to deal with. The traffic down the one-way street past the station was constant, but slow. When she appeared on the pavement, he had to do a double take, concerned he was hallucinating. His heart surged as he saw her standing there, drenched to the bone. She was obviously heading for a bus, and for all he knew, the next one might be about to arrive, but regardless, he couldn’t leave her there. As such, he’d stopped and offered her a lift, and now there she was, sitting in his car, sobbing.

“Do you want to talk about it?” he said. Whatever had happened had been enough to shake her up badly, and the dripping wet woman who was currently wiping her nose on one of Eunice’s emergency tissues was a long way from the Fleur he’d previously experienced.
