CHAPTER 14

Supervising Art Director At Disneyland

After Walt passed away, Dick Irvine didn’t know what to give me as an assignment. I was finishing up my Tomorrowland re-design work, and he definitely didn't want me back on the Haunted Mansion because he didn't like all the crazy Museum of the Weird ideas I had. Hell, it was pretty obvious that he didn't even want me in the building at that point. So, to get me out of his hair, he sent me off to Disneyland to be the Supervising Art Director.

Pretty much what that meant was, if they were changing the wallpaper in any of the buildings, it was my responsibility to pick out the wallpaper. If they were going to change the color of any of the buildings, it was my responsibility to pick out the color. If they were taking a curb out, I had to be down there to make sure that the curbs were taken out.

It was a lot of work, but it suited me pretty well. I did it for about three years, and I learned so much while there. There was a huge difference between working at WED and working directly in Disneyland every single day. It was absolutely an incredible education for me, because I was working with all the different divisions of the Park. That included janitorial, food, Maintenance, Operations and more. I really got to know the Park inside out and backwards. It was probably one of the greatest educations I’ve ever had because every division would tell me different stories, because most of them had people that had been working there since the Park opened. It was almost a history lesson for me to go through all that.

Back in those days, the Park was still closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Both of those days were just filled with meetings with all the different divisions. I'd be going from one part of the Park to another all day long. I didn't have a bicycle or anything, so it got to be pretty tiring. Well, eventually I got permission to drive my car around Disneyland.

Yes, you read that correctly. I drove my beautiful little red Porsche around the Park. Crazy, right? It was marvelous, though. Their only requirement was that I had to keep a big piece of cardboard in the Porsche. Whenever I would park the car, I'd slide that piece of cardboard underneath it so the engine wouldn’t drip oil onto the pavement. And no, I never parked in the Castle.
