CHAPTER X

An Enduring Structure

Romans 8.31: If God is for us, who can be against us?

Most people want to be a part of something that will last… something that will endure after they are gone. The way we treat others and the values that we operate under on a day to day basis create the culture that we are known for. My pastor, Steve Kelly, has often said that we create the culture that we are willing to tolerate.

In our home and in our businesses, we have the opportunity to influence everyone around us through our belief system. Nothing is more attractive than creating an environment rooted in a fundamental belief in our fellow man! Some people live their lives as if they are “policemen” – always looking for the “violations” in life. Others have found the secret of living their lives as “fans” – devoting themselves to rooting and cheering each other on toward success and greatness? Which kind of person would you rather be around? What is the culture that people feel you create and tolerate?

As Senior Vice President in charge of world-wide sales for International Family Entertainment, my job was to recruit, motivate and inspire a world-wide and world-class sales force tasked with generating hundreds of millions of dollars in advertising revenue on an annual basis for The Family Channel. With offices in New York, Chicago, Detroit, LA, London and Hong Kong, I had the opportunity to meet and work with a variety of incredibly talented and motivated sales professionals. In each instance, without exception, I found that if I was willing to invest in the success of my sales people, I never had to worry about my own success! People loved working with me and for me because they knew I was committed to seeing them succeed. This spirit permeated our teams and helped us contribute to the growth an asset worth from just a little over $1 million to $1.6 billion in merely a decade!

H.J. Heinz also believed in people. His people performed in extraordinary ways because of the positive and affirming culture he created. They knew he was cheering them on. They knew he was committed to their success… in business, in life, for life! He created a culture built on an unselfish commitment to the success of those around him! It is no mystery why his organizations were so incredibly successful. They were built on successful people.

By achieving an eminent business success, he demonstrated that thorough ethics and thoroughly sound, practical business methods are wholly compatible. A still greater fact which he demonstrated was that such ethics, which seem at first sight intensely individual and personal, can be infused throughout a whole great organization, and can become so deeply implanted that they are self-perpetuating.

A cardinal article of his faith was that men can be trusted, that most men would rather do right than wrong. He perceived that the reason they did not adhere to their best inclinations was that they were afraid they could not succeed that way in business.
