CHAPTER THIRTEEN
âAH, THERE YOU ARE, you gorgeous young man.â The elderly woman lying on the exam table located in the middle of the room had a twinkle in her eyes as she waggled her fingers at Gareth and Billie almost laughed out loud at her greeting. âI thought youâd skipped out on me.â
âMe? Skip out on you, Mrs Berkley?â Gareth murmured, and Billie blinked at the low, easy, flirty tone to his voice. âNever.â
âOh, and youâve bought a pretty young woman with you.â Mrs Berkley beamed at Billie. âCome in, my dear.â She gestured with her good arm. âMy goodness, how do you young people get things done around here with so much to distract you?â
He glanced at Billie. Their gazes locked and her breath hitched for a second.
âItâs a challenge, Mrs B., I canât deny that,â Gareth said, before switching his attention to the patient, sitting himself down on the stool beside the table and swinging slightly from side to side.
Mrs B. cackled merrily. âI can imagine. I remember when me and my Ted were going around. Couldnât pass each other without wanting to tear each otherâs clothes off.â
Billie blinked at the frank admission and Gareth stopped swivelling on the stool as the room filled with a pregnant silence.
âHah.â The octogenarian cracked up again. âThat shocked the cotton socks off you, didnât it? What, you think you young people invented sex?â
Gareth recovered quite quickly. âAbsolutely not, and I thank you and your generation most earnestly for your pioneering ways.â
Mrs B. grinned from ear to ear. âYouâre welcome,â she said, her hand covering Garethâs and giving it a pat. âI could tell you some stories that would make you blush right to the roots of your hair.â
Billieâs mind boggled but Gareth had her measure. âI donât embarrass easily, Mrs B. We nurses arenât prone to being shocked.â
Billie was pleased Gareth wasnât shocked because she had to admit to feeling just the tiniest bit so. She didnât know if Mrs B. was always this outrageous or if it was the combination of alcohol and drugs but Billie wasnât used to such freeness of expression in eighty-year-olds.
But it appeared Mrs Berkley was on a roll. The older woman gave Gareth a secretive smile and tapped the side of her nose three times. âI still reckon I could teach you a thing or two, young man.â
Gareth, looking completely unconcerned by the flirting, grinned and said, âIâll bet you could.â
Mrs B. turned her eyes on Billie. âIsnât he marvellous, dear? I mean, really, do they have those nudie calendars for male nurses...you know, like they do for the firefighters? This young man could be the centrefold.â
Now Billie really was at a loss for words and not just because theyâd been uttered by a great-grandmother. The illicit thought of Gareth stripped nude made her lose her train of thought.
She glanced at Gareth, who was looking at her with a quirked eyebrow. âYes,â he mused. âWhy donât we do calendars?â
Billie really felt like sheâd leapt into an alternate universe.
