CHAPTER EIGHT

SHE COULDN’T GET away from him now.

Nick had his sights set on Jennifer. She was in the scrub room alone, having just completed a surgery. He was going to get some answers.

She’d been avoiding him, and though that should be a relief to him—because if she was absent, he wasn’t so tempted by the thought of being with her—it irked him to no end and he wanted to know why.

He barged into the scrub room. Jennifer jumped, then quickly glanced around her, looking for a way to escape. Only there wasn’t one.

“Well, long time no see, Dr. Mills.”

She regained her composure. “What’re you talking about, Nick?”

“Oh, so it’s still Nick, then?”

Jennifer frowned. “What has gotten into you?”

“Well, seeing how a couple of weeks ago you were angry at me because I was avoiding you, I think the answer is pretty self-explanatory.”

“I’m not avoiding you.” She stepped on the bar under the sink and began to scrub her hands, vigorously. “I was in surgery.”

Nick leaned against the doorjamb. “Oh, really? That’s a long surgery.”

“What’re you talking about?” she asked.

“A surgery that lasted two weeks. Impressive. Do tell me about it.”

Jennifer rolled her eyes and shook the excess water off her hands before grabbing a paper towel. “I’ve been busy. I haven’t been avoiding you.”

“I think you’re lying.”

Her eyes narrowed. “I’m not lying.” She tried to push past him, but he put his arm across her escape route.

“I just want to know,” he said. “Much like you pestered me when I was avoiding you.”

“Ha!” She shot him a triumphant look. “Vindication. You were avoiding me.”

“And you’re avoiding me.”

“I’m not, actually. I’ve been busy.”

“Look, I saw the paper. I know you hate the limelight, but there’s no reason to avoid me.”

“Not avoiding. I am head of the trauma department.”

“I get wanting to hide. Trust me.”

“Do you want to talk about why you’re hiding?” she asked.

“No.”

“Well, then, now can you let me pass? You can’t really hold me captive in a scrub room.”

“Why not?” He grinned and leaned forward. “It’s kind of exciting to have your attention like this.”

Her eyes widened and she gave him the scariest stare; it looked a bit deranged as she moved closer to him.

“What’re you doing?” Nick asked.

“I’m staring you down so you’ll move,” Jennifer said.

“It’s freaky.”

“It’s not supposed to be freaky. It’s intimidating.”

Nick laughed. “It’s anything but. The only way that stare is intimidating is because of its freakiness.”

Jennifer stopped the stare. “I know Krav Maga.”

Nick shook his head and stepped to the side as she walked past him, but he fell into step beside her. He wasn’t going to let her get off so easy.

She tsked under her breath when she saw him beside her. “Didn’t my Krav Maga threat scare you off?”

“No, because, you see, I was in the army for quite a while. I know how to fend off Krav Maga.”

“You’re a pest.” She tried to say it in a serious tone, but her voice broke with a chuckle. “Usually my threats with Krav Maga and the stare down work.
