Gonzo considered whether he should write more, but decided not to. ‘Shoot carefully’ was a memorable way to end the story and would probably make it past the military censor. By the time he had finished, the quartet of helicopters had reached the vicinity of Nabatieh, a city of more than 100,000 located in central Lebanon. To the south of the city was a line of three hills, each roughly two miles apart and affording a good view of the surrounding countryside. Each of the Israeli Paratrooper Brigade’s three battalions had been helicoptered onto these hills the previous night. Flying over the eastern most hill, occupied by the 890th Battalion, Gonzo could see trenches, barbed wire, and a pit filled with large caliber artillery pieces. The guns were firing south at a target Gonzo couldn’t see.

The helicopters continued east until they approached Marjayoun, a large town at the head of the Beqaa Valley. Gonzo looked south, down the highway that led from Marjayoun which would eventually parallel the Israeli border. He could see dozens of flashes and dozens of smoke plumes. Gilden slapped his shoulder. ‘Hey, you probably want to get in on that!’ he shouted above the helicopter rotors.

‘Can you get me there?!’

‘Sure!’ he smiled. ‘But not until we land!’
