30.
Yes. Crazy. That was it. What she was doing was crazy.
Julie walked down the beach, scuffing her toes in the sand, enjoying the sun’s warmth on her skin and squinting out at the water. Today’s headache was just a dull background noise. She could almost forget it was there. The sun glittering off the waves barely made her wince. It was a lazy ocean today, made sleepy by the sun and the gentle breeze that tickled over its surface.
A nice day for a picnic.
But it was definitely crazy, what she was doing.
Today they were meeting halfway down the beach for their picnic. Julie carried a backpack laden with thermos and mugs. She’d also made bacon and egg pie and had a loaf of bread fresh from the oven. They would spread a blanket on the sand and lie there sunning themselves, talking and eating. Laughing and kissing too, most likely, as though the world were an okay place.
It would be an okay place, while they were together. Serenity would arrive as she always did, face drawn and strained, eyes haunted with sleepless nights and the sight of her wife slipping away from her. Julie would kiss the tiny creases at the edges of Serenity’s eyes, and they would relax, her mouth upturning, lips seeking. Everything would be all right for a while. An oasis of peace and pleasure for the both of them. Even though the band was playing now, the low melody accompanying the hum of her headache. She’d started to dance, and how far more intricate it was than she had expected!
Julie lifted her eyes from the water and squinted up into the sky. Just a few cirrus clouds high above the world. Finally the rain had stopped and spring had dropped in to stay. The days were heating up, on a slow boil towards summer. Standing still now, Julie scanned the sky, turning away from the water lapping at the sand like a kitten at a plate of cream and concentrated on the swathe of blue over the forested hills.
Nothing there either. She lifted her sunglasses a moment and looked again. Still nothing. She’d been out just about every night to her viewing platform high up on the hill, but the Rondures weren’t yet showing themselves to her during the day. Serenity hadn’t mentioned them in a while, except to report that she hadn’t seen any.
Serenity thought they were gone for good, whatever they’d been, but Julie knew better, of course.
The breeze lifted hair from Julie’s neck and kissed the knob of bone at the top of her spine. She turned her gaze from the sky and looked down the beach for any sign of Serenity. She wasn’t there and Julie returned to her brooding, settling the sunglasses back on her nose. Serenity would likely be late. It was hard for her to get away at all.
Shoulders tense, Julie rolled them, tying to ease the sore muscles, but knowing it wouldn’t help. Sooner or later Serenity would start seeing the Rondures again, and what would happen then was open to question.
