Chapter 20

“You have a lead?” Jonathan sat at his desk at home, listening to Brubaker’s explanation over the phone. “What do you mean you can’t tell me anything yet? I thought you said you had a lead?” He listened, his fingers drumming impatiently on the desk.

“Her Aunt is from Wisconsin,” he repeated, his impatience growing. He sat and listened as Brubaker spoke. “What do you mean not there?” he almost shouted at the newest information he was getting. “Gone where?” He listened again, his fingers suddenly stilling. “Europe? Where exactly in Europe?” The line crackled a little as Jonathan’s voice took an excited edge.

“Western Europe? That’s a lot of ground to cover, Brubaker,” his voice hissed into the phone. “Narrow your options and keep me updated.” He hung up the phone, not waiting for any other explanations.

But then again, his rules didn’t include women turning into wild cats, so he figured it didn’t really matter. He would be on his way to Ireland soon and then he’d get the answers he was seeking.

Like with human births, time was of the essence to save not only the puppies’ lives but the mother’s as well. The fact that there was sure to be multiple puppies didn’t make matters any easier.

Morgan had called for Brigid, Maggie and Jamie to come help while Clare stayed home with Braden. Performing a cesarean was a dangerous procedure. Without the pressure from being delivered naturally, the newborn pups would have to be stimulated to breathe. Usually labor, and
