Chapter 17

MAGGIE’S COTTAGE WAS full of people when he finally got back nearly two hours later. Quinn met him at the door and ushered him in.

“Is she well?” Breandán tried to control the worry in his voice but didn’t succeed.

“She still isn’t speaking,” Quinn answered, shoving his hands in his pockets. “But she’s out of danger. Mum, Brigid, and Morgan are with her.”

“Did Ian find out anything?” Quinn’s face fell and Breandán knew the answer. “He’s dead?” Quinn nodded and Breandán cursed. “Does Maggie know?”

“No one has told her, but I think she knows,” Quinn answered. They both looked up as Dermot walked down the hall with Rowan.

“She’s sleeping now,” Rowan told them, giving Breandán a friendly pat on the shoulder.

“I’ve made Brigid lie down in the guest room,” Dermot muttered. “She really has to stop thinking she’s superhuman.”

“Her being pregnant isn’t helping you not worry either,” Quinn commented. “But I know the feeling. I was the same way with Morgan.”

“Shannon and Morgan are going to stay with her,” Rowan sat on the sofa with a sigh.

There was knock at the door and Quinn went to open it. Ian, his face pale, walked in, sending a nod at everyone.

“What happened?” Breandán asked.

“I’d like to hear that from you first,” Ian responded, sitting in a chair and rubbing a hand down his face. “Then I’ll tell you what I found out.”

“I was taking her to Dún Aonghasa,” Breandán began.

“Dun Aengus?” Quinn used the English name for the ruins. “That’s where it happened?”

“Aye. As soon as we got there, she changed.”

“What do you mean?” Rowan asked.

“Her eyes got glassy, like she wasn’t all there. She said the ruins were built atop Findias.”

“That’s impossible,” Quinn argued.

“That’s what I said, but then she showed me.” Breandán sighed. “She grabbed my hand and controlled my powers.”

Rowan and Quinn both spoke at the same time. “She did what?”

“She took my hand and controlled my power. My other hand lifted on its own and created an illusion, as Maggie was seeing it. An image of Findias, where the ruins of Dún Aonghasa stand. It was enormous and stunning. When she let go of me, the image faded.”

“If it really was Findias, the ground would’ve been full of power.” Rowan commented.

“Aye, I felt it after she touched me. The ground nearly shook with the power beneath it,” he answered. “We walked into the ruins and she saw something on one of the inner walls. It was written in magic and appeared when she touched it. It was Ogham script.”

“What did it say?”

“It spoke of the time of the eighth king. The Fomóirí descended on Inis Mór to take the sword. It was moved to the mainland for safekeeping with the council of kings.”

“That would’ve been nearly 400 years after the first High Kings,” Quinn murmured.

“There’s no record or legends of it,” Rowan added.

“It’s what she saw.”

“What happened next?” Ian asked.

“She felt dark power,” he answered. “The temperature dropped to freezing, the sun disappeared behind the clouds, and the Fomóirí appeared.
