Chapter Seven
Sarah felt the blush starting at her chest and rising into her cheeks. She rarely blushed, but she was making up for lost time now. And it infuriated her. She did not want to be pleased that the marquis would say he liked her. He most likely meant next to nothing by it. She was being beyond foolish to be blushing like a schoolroom miss over his thoughtless words. But his watchful gaze made her hesitate. Maybe his words weren’t meant so flippantly after all. Not that it mattered. Reaching deep within herself, Sarah tried to bolster her animosity.
It matters absolutely nothing at all that the man is as handsome as the devil. He is a pawn of the devil, and well you should remember that. He cannot be of any assistance with your responsibilities toward Lavinia. He certainly wouldn’t marry her. He would turn her into a quivering wreck of nerves within a fortnight if he were to take her into his life. Despite the heat she could still feel in her cheeks, Sarah turned an impassive face toward the marquis.
With a negligent shrug she finally replied to his nearly unanswerable statement. “I doubt you are being completely honest, my lord, but it matters very little. I don’t like you. I am only dancing with you because you gave me no choice. And I will endeavour to avoid the same situation in the future, as I cannot fathom what you are after.”
After stating her case, she was glad that he didn’t seem to have a ready reply. She resolutely turned her face away from his, silently praying that the music would end quickly. She couldn’t bear to spend much more time in his arms. Sarah was well aware that she was only human. Any woman could have her head turned by being the focus of the undivided attention of such a charismatic man.
The soul of diplomacy, Sarah couldn’t help but excuse the man despite her misgivings. He probably didn’t even realize the extent of the effect he had on others. Oh, she knew quite well that he was arrogantly aware of his power. Just note the strange conversation they had shared the night before at the dinner table. But she didn’t think he was actually trying to turn her head. Surely he wouldn’t want the bother of having women falling at his feet. That thought brought an amused smile to her lips, which was a big mistake.
She felt him inhale sharply. It was a delicious sensation. While she had taken many dance lessons and had even practiced with the dancing instructor more than once and with Lavinia a multitude of times, she hadn’t actually experienced the waltz in real life in the arms of an attractive man very often. No wonder the young ladies were always tittering about it. Her eyes involuntarily sought his as he lowered his head toward her ear.
“I am consumed with curiosity as to what has put a smile on your face after such a strong statement.
