Ronni and I got to the hotel room first. I’d been meeting with a new lawyer in New York, John Calcagni, to prepare my case, and I had a stack of legal documents that I spread out on the small table in the hotel room. This was the proof that Eddie was cheating his boss in Australia, and that he was cheating us, too.

Before Eddie arrived, I sat on the bed and tried to calm myself down. I knew that I was in the right, and Eddie was in the wrong. I knew that without any doubt at all. What I didn’t know was how Eddie would react. Would he be able to explain it all? Would he even care? Would he try to intimidate me? It was like a big chess game, except with very real stakes.

Eddie was late, but finally we heard a knock on the door. My heart jumped. I opened the door, and Eddie stood there wearing a silk designer suit and expensive shoes. He seemed so confident, so sure of himself. Like he already knew what the outcome of the meeting would be. I motioned for him to come in.

Then I got right to it.

“I know what you did,” I said as soon as Eddie sat down at the table. “I know what you’re trying to do to me and my three children. When you leave this room, you’re either going to agree to everything I say, or you will be sued a hundred different ways.”

Eddie looked at me and smiled. Like he didn’t have a care in the world.

“Who the hell do you think you are?” he said.
