Chapter 6

Afghanistan

In Syria, Yusef had met with the IS Commanders who were planning retreat from there and Iraq faced with the alternative of defeat and annihilation if they stood their ground! Yusef had offered them safe haven in Afghanistan, where they could link with the Taliban. They could then move into Pakistan and India to gain territory.

Yusef said that with the funding and manpower available, the regions of Afghanistan would fall and the USA would be increasingly unpopular if they intervened at the Afghan Government’s request.

Their agent/insider in the government had already notified them that a request for assistance had been made to the USA. What they did not know was that the USA’s intervention would be with a plan. That plan had the aim of luring large Taliban and IS forces into areas where they could be encircled and destroyed. The bomber and fighter aircraft would be held back until the final phase of containment had been achieved.

Helen was jubilant when she told Zack that their house purchase was in progress with completion due in about six weeks. She was now on the hunt for furniture etc. She asked Zack to list anything he wanted including stuff from his parents’ house. Zack thought about it and said, ‘Talk to Mom – she knows what’s mine otherwise you choose but nothing too glitzy please!’

Zack was summoned to a meeting with Buzz in Washington the next day. Al was invited too which would lessen the tedium of their flight. Zack was greeted by the General on arrival at their quarters (actually a suite) in the Pentagon. Over a light lunch, Buzz explained that at the meeting at 4 p.m. that day the plans for the mission in Afghanistan would be approved and or modified, following which orders would be issued to the commanders in the field including Zack.

Al asked who would be at the meeting, at which point there was a knock at the door. Obviously, this was expected by Buzz who went to open it. Standing there was Squadron Leader, Freddie Sanders. Zack and Al rose to meet him, genuinely pleased to see him again.

‘Great to see you, Freddie,’ they both said together, Freddie too was smiling. The General then explained that he had invited Freddie so that any issues over joint tactics and other possible issues could be ironed out before they met formally.

During the next 45 minutes, the outline of the plan was discussed. The RAF and the USAF would be coordinating their operations through a joint command unit in Kabul and similar bilateral ground force actions would also be run from there. All knew from bitter experience that any failure in communications could be catastrophic.

Zack asked how the RAF were getting on with their new Typhoon planes. Freddie said I am pleased we will be mainly using the Tornados, in view of their bombing capabilities. However, a few Typhoons will be deployed to give a better fighter cover for the bombing and refuelling planes.

The meeting approved the top-secret plans, but no written documents were allowed to be taken from the meeting.
