My father pulls up to Venusâs apartment building and I slide out of the car, kissing him on the cheek.
âBye-bye, Papa. Iâll see you later,â I say, holding the passenger door open and peeking my head back into the cabin.
âBye, sweetheart,â he says, âand tell Venus I said hello and that your mom wishes she could have made it but that Abuela needed help.â
âI will,â I say, shutting the door and heading into the familiar building. I make my way toward the private elevator, only to see Eclipse and their manager arguing with the secretary. Wondering what the issue is, I approach the group.
âWhatâs up, guys?â I ask Noah.
The tall man runs his hands through his hair, frustration coming off him in waves.
âNeither Venus nor Taein are answering. And sheââhe flicks his head to the red-cheeked woman sitting behind the main deskââwonât let us up to see them.â
Noah glares at her again and I canât help feeling bad for her. Sheâs just doing her job. I nod to the secretary, Samantha.
âTheyâre with me. Friends of Venus. Sheâs expecting them,â I say.
Then, without waiting for her response, I start walking to the elevator. The five people follow me and we all pile in. I punch in the access code. Within seconds we reach the penthouse suite and walk down the short hallway leading to the white front door. It takes me a moment to rummage through my purse and find the card key. When I do, I swing open the door and walk in, the others following hesitantly behind me.
âJust take off your shoes and wait in the living room. Iâll go see where Venus is,â I tell Noah.
He nods and I venture deeper into the house, arriving at her bedroom. Venus probably just forgot to turn her phone on, or maybe sheâs in the bathroom. I donât bother to knock and just barge into her room, only to instantly regret it. Iâm so surprised I scream. In the back of my mind, I hear the footsteps of the others coming, but thatâs not what Iâm focused on.
Iâm met with the sight of the two soulmates passed out on the bed, sheets ripped off and spilling off the mattress. I canât tell where Venus ends and Taein starts, every single one of their limbs tangled together. My best friendâs hair is a mess, splayed over the starâs bare chest all the way up to his neck. Her cheek is pressed right above his heart. She wears one of my dadâs old T-shirts, but itâs ridden all the way up to her ribs. The only thing beneath it is a pair of white panties. And Taein. Taein wears only a pair of boxers.
I grip the material of my T-shirt above my heart, so stunned Iâm barely able to breathe. This quickly? I mean, they are soulmates, but still! Good thing my mom isnât here.
By this time everyone else has rushed to my side, no doubt worried by the scream I let out. They all have their own reactions.
