That text alone was confirmation of how much he’d really fucked up. Cole never set a meeting without his approval first, even though it was part of his job, and he’d had his brother text him rather than do it himself.

He was an asshole.

Ryan rushed through his morning routine and went to the lobby, hoping they had some coffee available. As soon as he walked in, he could smell the coffee, pouring himself a cup when he found it.

He spotted Cole and Wyatt in the conference room and moved to join them. When he opened the door, they looked up and, without acknowledging him, went back to their discussion.

Ryan walked to the table and sat down across from them before breaking the silence. “I made a mistake last night.”

“You think,” Wyatt replied.

“I told you I wouldn’t cause a scene and then I did. I hope I didn’t ruin any friendships for you guys.”

They looked at him, their eyes still heated.

Cole spoke first, “Other than embarrassing me you didn’t hurt anything I can’t fix. However, you fucked Rae’s world up. Again. Any plans to fix that?”

“I’m going to apologize to her if she will talk to me and I’ll give her the divorce.”

“You should have done that before you blew up her life.” Cole took a sip of his coffee.

“I know,” Ryan gritted his teeth. “I can’t do anything about her boyfriend though.”

With a snarl Cole stood, picked up the papers in front of him, and slammed them down in front of Ryan. “Better read up on the way. We need to leave.”

Wyatt and Ryan watched him leave, his strides carrying out of the room quickly, the door slamming shut behind him.

“Seeing Rae finally happy was something we were really proud of her for.” Wyatt turned back to Ryan. “You can’t see it because all you see is the girl you lost, and I get it, Cole gets it, probably better than you do, but it doesn’t excuse what you’ve done. She deserves to be able to live her life her way. When Cole found her and realized that she wasn’t hurting anymore, he swore he would do anything he could to protect that. You tore that promise he made to himself to pieces. You hurt her and he has a right to be pissed off at you for that.”

Baffled, Ryan asked, “Why does he care? They weren’t close.”

“You really are fucking clueless, aren’t you? Cole was in love with Sammie when she died. They had been together for a few months and the only person who knew was Rae. Why do you think she clung to him that night? He gets her pain and knows that her happiness is what Sammie would want, so he is doing what he can to make sure she stays happy.” Standing and pushing his chair in, Wyatt finished with, “If you say a word to him about any of this, I will fucking end you, but I thought it may help if you understood. If you remembered that you weren’t the only one who lost someone all those years ago.
