It almost worked. Almost. And she was furious.

The woman had actually brought the baby to the mortuary, close enough to touch it, but then the monster had detected her, and its tentacles had slithered out of the mist, reaching for her, hungry for her, anxious to snatch her away and spoil all her plans. She’d had no choice but to release the woman and move away from the opening, back into the mists where it couldn’t find her. She despised the beast so thoroughly that just the thought of it made her tremble with loathing.

She despised it almost as much as she hated Jason.

Although her power was growing, she could enter the minds of the living and take control only if they came close to her, close to the opening. Once inside someone’s mind, she could travel with that person, but she was unable to make the initial entry unless her victim was inside the building. The one exception was Jennifer Wentworth, whose mind was like a radio, always turned to the right channel, always ready to receive the message.

She could reach out in other ways. And these were the means she would have to use. Still, it was frustrating, because if she could just slip into the one mind she most wanted to manipulate …
