Chapter Nine

After breakfast, we went for a walk around the property and Todd showed me the clubhouse that he said he and his brother Craig had built when they were growing up. It wasn't too far away, but it was in the opposite direction from which we had walked the day before.

When we came upon the clubhouse, my jaw dropped, to Todd's delight.

Todd strolled around the outside of it, pointing to and describing the various parts of it that he was particularly proud of.

"I had wanted to expand it. There's plenty of room to do that, especially over on the other side, but we never ended up making it bigger. It's great though. Isn't it?"

My eyes darted around, taking everything in. "Absolutely," I said, nodding my head for emphasis. Todd walked back towards the front of the structure.

"You built this all by yourselves?"

"Just us. Of course, we didn't get the materials and tools ourselves, but the labor was all ours." Todd pointed up to the shingled roof. "I broke my arm falling off a ladder when we were doing the roof. Craig was playing around, shaking the ladder, and I lost my balance. I landed wrong. I didn't tell my parents about him shaking the ladder. They would have punished him."

I was happy Todd was beginning to open up more about his past.

"Your brother likes to clown around like you do."

"Yea. Guess so. We were pretty tight growing up. Don't really see each other that much nowadays though."

I had envisioned something relatively small, pieced together with wooden odds and ends, no windows, and a padlocked, makeshift door and dirt floor. Todd's clubhouse, although somewhat weathered and aged, was a miniature version of his aunt and uncle's well-adorned cabin. The clubhouse was replete with a slew of gadgets and features that the two brothers could spend hours and hours occupying themselves with—a microscope, games, water pistols, swimming gear, and lots of other items. It had paned glass windows, and a regular door and lock (which Todd apparently had the key for on his key ring), and its one room was very much larger than I expected.

It definitely didn't look to me like something that the boys would have built by themselves. I was going to ask him how old they were when they built it, but then decided against it. I didn't want to start sounding like a detective grilling a suspect. Todd was very handy, so who knows, maybe he and his brother really did build it themselves.

On the walls, and interspersed with the other objects, were some disturbing items that definitely called attention to Todd's obsession. And there were other seemingly normal items that you might expect to find in a country house, but in light of the previous nights eye-opening disclosures, they were rather worrisome to find there, including a three-pronged spear, knives, ropes, and a large slingshot.

There were a number of drawings tacked to the walls. I couldn't take my eyes off the largest one, attached to
