CHAPTER 5

RENDERING TECHNIQUES AND SHADING

Rendering is a term applied to the augmentation of a line drawing to add texture, colour and shadow. The previous chapter has dealt with the illustration of the 3D aspect of a designed space primarily in terms of line. This chapter is concerned with the additions to both appearance and mood that rendering can achieve. Knowing that your drawing is being prepared to take colour or texture means that you need to consider what type of line you are to employ within the drawing. A drawing that is to be delivered in black and white alone will rely more heavily on line quality than one that will eventually employ colour, and less line work will be required by a drawing that will be delivered in full colour. Before you start a drawing you need to be sure of how you want it to appear when it is finished. This decision about its look and feel should be based on how the content or subject of the drawing best promotes your design idea.
