THE RISE OF A GANG

Anna was gone, but I still had my boys. Argon and Erion, the Balkan brothers I grew up with, remained among my closest friends. We all had rough upbringings, and the loyalty we felt toward one another was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced with anyone else. They were the brothers I had always wanted. They helped my mom find an apartment when she didn’t have one. Erion stayed at my place when he had nowhere else to stay.

Erion was the youngest of the two. A short, strong dude who loved girls and smoking weed, he was a solidly built and was a talented boxer. He could have gone pro when he was eighteen had he not wasted his life on weed and women. Argon was a hardworking man who was a bit more cool-headed than his brother. One time, we were chasing after this guy because we believed he had snitched on our friends George and Wayne. When we caught him, I asked him if he was the one, they called The Convict.

“Yeah,” he answered.

“Did you rat on George and Wayne?”

“What are you talking about?” The Convict asked.

“Oh, so you speak Danish?” I asked and spat my gum out into his face.

The Convict reached for an iron bar and tried to hit me in the head. (I know what you’re thinking: Why are there always iron bars lying around like it’s a stage of Double Dragon?) The easy-going Argon tried to calm down The Convict and convince him to drop the iron bar. But then Erion and I attacked him instead. If it wasn’t for Argon, we might’ve killed him. We wanted to take the iron bar from him and bust his skull, but Argon stopped us, saying, “What are you doing? You’re gonna kill him!”

If he hadn’t been there, who knows what we might’ve done? Argon was a tough guy, a fighter, but he was more sensible than we were.

Argon and Erion were not fond of weapons, and when the young guys in Hundige started carrying guns and using them against one another, they opposed it. I mean, they got into fights and stuff, but to me, that doesn’t make them criminals. I think Erion is working for the municipality now, teaching young boys to box. Argon cleans façades with his dad.

Abdul, Farid, Maxwell, Hamza, and Tarif were also part of the crew. Abdul was smart. A kind person, except when he got mad. He was big and strong with a head like a ram. We called him Ramhead ’cause he could bang his skull against anything without feeling a thing. He wasn’t a criminal, though. He’s a social worker now and makes a living off his big heart.

Hamza was the guy I became friends with after the first time we got into a fight. He’s still a criminal. Farid was a troublemaker like I am. He loved to knock people out with his first punch. He was one of my best friends.

Tarif was the funny one.
