Later that night Jennifer snuggled up to Courtney in bed. When Courtney’s arms were around her she felt such security and love.

“I think we are the lucky ones because you love us and somehow we’ve convinced you to stay.”

“Convinced me to stay? Honey, I’m living my best life.”

Jennifer propped up on her elbow and smiled into Courtney’s sparkling blue eyes. She felt like Courtney could look into her soul. “I love it when you call me after school to meet you and the boys. I never got to do that before. When we’re all together, that’s the best part of my day.”

“Really?” Courtney said, arching one eyebrow. She reached up and ran her hand behind Jennifer’s neck and pulled her in until their lips met.

Jennifer felt herself being pushed onto her back as Courtney deepened the kiss. She loved it when Courtney did this. It was as if Courtney consumed her. Every thought, feeling, and touch was Courtney.

When she barely pulled away Courtney smirked. “Are you sure that’s not the best part of your day?”

Jennifer chuckled. “I don’t know, it’s not over yet.”

Courtney laughed and ran her hand through Jennifer’s hair. “Something else wonderful happened today.”

“Do tell.”

“I waited for Mason when school was out and he called me Mama in front of Sherry Parilla.”

Jennifer felt her heart swell. “That had to feel good.”

“It did. She was talking to him and she called me his mama,” Courtney said, widening her eyes.

“Oh! Now that’s big!”

“I thought so, too. It made me feel…” She paused then looked into Jennifer’s eyes. “It made me feel like his mama.”

Jennifer’s smile radiated across her face and lit the room. “You are his mama.”

“I am.” She nodded.

Jennifer brushed her thumb across Courtney’s chin and was about to pull her down for another kiss when Courtney said, “That’s not all.”

Jennifer raised her brows and listened.

“I forgot to lock my room when we went to chess club and when I got back our picture was turned down again.”

“What?” Jennifer exclaimed.

“I’m thinking of it as a gentle reminder that Louise Harrell is watching.”

“Oh Courtney, that’s not good. Are you sure it’s her? You don’t think it’s Sherry, do you?”

“No. Sherry is genuinely nice to me. We’ve become friends in a neighborly sort of way.”

“I don’t like it, not one bit,” Jennifer said firmly.

“You know, babe, if she wants to turn a picture down every now and then, I can live with that. As long as she’s not trying to undermine me with other teachers, mess with my students or Mason. She hasn’t done that. Plus, I rarely see her.”

“What happens when you do see her?”

“Nothing. She doesn’t smile or acknowledge me. It’s fine.”

Jennifer sighed. “I hope she retires this year and leaves you alone.”

Courtney smiled down at Jennifer. “We had a wonderful evening with our boys. The last thing I want to be talking about is Louise Harrell when we could be doing this.” Courtney brought her lips to Jennifer’s and ended the conversation.

Jennifer sank into the kiss and tried to put Louise Harrell out of her mind.
