CHAPTER 18

Christopher DePierro parked the black SUV in the driveway. Before getting out, he observed the surrounding area, making sure there were no other nosey neighbors that needed to be dealt with. He made one quick glance at himself in the mirror, making sure his hair was firmly in place.

“Okay, let’s be quick. We can’t afford to slip up for the boss again. I’ve worked way too hard to get where I am to have some lousy real estate scum ruin things for us,” he said to Birdman, who sat in the passenger seat finishing off the last of his joint.

“Hold on just a sec, this thing’s almost gone. You want a hit?”

“For fuck’s sake. Can’t you wait until the job’s done to do that? How many times I tell you I don’t want my Suburban smelling?” Christopher asked.

“Man, you used to be a lot more fun to hang with. We do our best work after smoking,” Birdman said, shaking his head and putting the joint out in the soda bottle sitting in his cupholder.

“That was before I was second in command. If Vincent’s going to take me seriously, I need to stay off that shit. Let’s go.” Christopher opened his door quietly.

“Well, maybe all these fuckups wouldn’t have happened if you didn’t quit smoking… Just saying.”

They preferred to do their work at night when it was easier to stay hidden, but time was of the essence right now. The sooner they obtained the address, the sooner they could kill these people and be done with it. Christopher preferred dealing with his regular day-to-day tasks than erasing problems like this, but it was all part of the job. His favorite gig was handling the sports book, where he controlled all the odds and money. Vincent often told Chris how proud he was of the job he’d done with that side of the business. He loved the feeling he got while watching sad, drunken, soon-to-be-divorced husbands seeing one of their bets go sour, knowing they were going to have to turn over boat loads of money to Costello. Either that or get the beating of a lifetime at the hands of Birdman. The truth was, the real reason Christopher quit smoking weed, and drinking for that matter, was that his true vice was gambling. Not only did he run the sports book, but he made—and won—many bets. It was a thrill like no other. The thought of that gave him an idea as they snuck around the back of the house.

“A hundred bucks says I find the folder before you,” he said, knowing full well Birdman would bite.

“Okay. Let’s up the ante though,” Jayme said with smirk. “If I find it first, you have to smoke with me after we kill these bozos, get blitzed out of your mind for old time’s sake.”

“Sure. And if I find it, you have to give me that signed Paul Pierce jersey you got hanging in your living room.”

“Oh, come on, man. You don’t even like the fucking Celtics, why you need that?”

“Money, money, money my friend.
