Iona Freeze was furious. The assassin Dice hired was showboating his quick draw skills while the mark disappeared into the night. Fortunately, Orvil’s man Prescott had found Travis’ ship and was keeping eyes on it. She wasn’t surprised that Travis had gone after Augustine Ward. The gunslinger was a wanted man with a hefty reward for his capture. It was the reason Travis Hurts was on P2 in the first place. And if he left, they would be in a fix.

“I don’t understand,” Orvil said. “Why do we care about this bounty hunter?”

“He must have taken someone important,” Reg said.

The trio from the Incendius Crime organization was huddled inside one of the shelters run by the Volinski Syndicate. It was costing them a thousand hard credits a day, which was outrageous for a shack with only one narrow camping cot, a tiny electric heater, and a battery-powered lantern. Maybe, Iona conceded, it was better than sleeping cold in a tent. She was surprised how cold it got at night in the boom town. But still, she thought the entire operation was costing too much, and taking way too long.

“You don’t understand how the law works,” Iona said from the doorway where she watched the locals going about their business.

“You get arrested, you go to jail,” Orvil said. “How complicated can it be?”

“There are laws about how people are prosecuted,” Iona said. She didn’t mind educating the low-level henchmen. They worked for her, and she had ambitions of taking over at some point, when the timing was right. Dice only cared about his people earning, but she wanted more. She was a woman of vision, and when she took the reins, she would ensure that everyone was focused on the same goal of being the most powerful organization in the galaxy.

“That’s the craziest thing I ever heard,” Reg said.

“But it’s true,” Iona said. “Do you know who Lawrence Pescitory is?”

“I’ve heard the name,” Orvil said with a shrug.

“He’s a made man. Operates a crew in the Commerce Ring. Got in hot water over tax fraud, and a money laundering beef. Then a cop got himself shot, and everyone’s looking at Lawrence.”

“Sounds like a frame up,” Orvil said. “I don’t miss having law jamming me up everywhere I go.”

“But here’s the point,” Iona persisted. “The prosecutor can throw spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks, doesn’t matter if it’s true or not. They’ll take Lawrence into court, tell a good story about how he killed an innocent policeman, and how the bounty hunter had to track him down across three different systems because Lawrence was desperate and on the run.”

“Those dirty bastards,” Reg grumbled.

“But that’s where their laws come into play,” Iona said. “You see, the bounty hunter doesn’t just hunt fugitives down and turn them in for a reward. He testifies about it. He can talk about what they did, maybe even what they said when he caught them. He can even submit evidence he found on them.”

“Or planted on them,” Orvil interjected.
