Chapter 14

Mac

The Farm to the Prison

Elisabeth, finishing her coffee, stood and announced that she was going to inventory the pantry.

“Girls, come along and you can help me. Then, afterwards, we can feed the chickens and horses, okay?”

“Oh, I love the horses,” Kenzie replied. “Can we go riding today?”

“I don’t know yet, sweetie, we will have to see later, but first I need your help.” They walked off together as Mac and Kevin stood.

“Honey, make sure you keep your pistol with you,” Mac cautioned. “That's our new reality. I hate it, but we just can’t be too careful. Guys, let's empty the trailer and truck, then there are a few things I want to show you.”

Soon both had been emptied and the supplies put away. The two younger men carried Mac and Elisabeth’s mattress into the house, while Mac backed the Travelall into the large barn.

Gathering back on the porch again, Mac said, “Kevin, you know a lot about this place, working with Jon and all, but these guys have only been out here once or twice. Let’s show them around.”

They all went to the barn, where Mac unlocked several of the side rooms.

“This one is food storage,” Mac said.

Inside, there were cases of food stacked on shelves that ran to the ceiling. Some boxes held MREs, while others held basic staples such as sugar, beans, rice, Spam, vegetables, and pasta.

“We can feed ten people for about one year if we’re careful. If we survive that long, we should be able to harvest whatever we’ve planted.”

“Wow, that’s a lot of food!” Uriah exclaimed.

“Well, it looks like it, but once we start using it, you’ll see how fast it goes. My grandson is a bit of a survivalist, too. He lives over by the Knightstown Meatlocker, about five miles from here. His mother-in-law has a bunch of land, and they raise cattle. We’ll probably be able to do some swapping with them. Jon hasn’t had the time to raise his own cattle, but we will probably need to do that or get some hogs, maybe both. There are a number of hog farmers in the area.

“Kevin, we’re going to have to work on that coalition we’ve discussed. It won't be easy for anyone to survive on their own. Folks from Anderson, Richmond, or Muncie will eventually make their way here, probably Indianapolis, too, after they hit Greenfield. The people in the cities are going to get hungry fast. Many people will die, and the survivors will come looking for food. It’s not going to be easy to hold on to what we have if we don’t work together.”

“I understand, Mac. I’ve talked to a few people about this the last couple of years. Some of them prepared. My sons will be coming out from Indianapolis, just like your boy. They have bicycles; I could never convince them to get an older car because they thought that the chance of an EMP event was pretty low. I think they should make it out of the city without too many problems.
