On July 8 Ravi departed on a brief European tour, which took in Aachen in Germany, the Jyväskylä Festival—his first time in Finland since the early 1930s—and Copenhagen. It was only when he returned to London on the 16th that the pace finally slowed down. In the previous eight weeks he had hurtled between TV shows, major concert halls, folk clubs and classical-music festivals, and recorded a film score and a historic album, but the most significant event of the tour happened near the end: finally meeting George Harrison.

A dinner party was specially arranged at 44 Fitzalan Road, the Angadi family home in Finchley. Harrison arrived in a Ferrari, and there was an extra guest that evening—Paul McCartney, who arrived separately and unannounced. News that two Beatles were visiting drew a crowd of neighbors onto the street. Ravi found McCartney to be “very charming and polite.” McCartney was interested in Indian music, but it was with Harrison that the real connection was forged.34 For Harrison, India and its music had the force of a life’s quest. “George was very, very serious, very intense,” recalls Shankara Angadi.35

George quizzed Ravi earnestly about both the music and the spirituality of India. Admitting that he was embarrassed about his playing on “Norwegian Wood,” he asked Ravi to teach him the sitar. Ravi was struck by how humble the young star was, and the pair hit it off. “I knew nothing about the rock world before I met George,” he later admitted.

Like anybody brought up in a strictly classical thing I had a tremendous fear of it—the sound, the people associated with it, every aspect. I had seen a few characters connected with it and I was not very attracted to them—but, after George, I had to change my opinion. He had more of a respect.36
