her husband went off to the smokehouse to fetch the meat.

She was young, pretty and blonde. Henry would have enjoyed a mild flirtation with her had his mind not been otherwise occupied. "I'm from Cincinnati,** he said. "I'm making a surveying trip for a land company."

"That so?** she said. Surveyors were everywhere these days.

When the husband returned with the slab of bacon, wrapped in burlap, Henry paid him the seventy-five cents he asked for. He wondered whether to make an offer for the rifle. No, the risk was too great. Even an ignorant American peasant was certain to realize the value of such a fine weapon. If the man refused to part with it, which seemed likely, it would be difficult to steal the rifle without placing himself under suspicion.

Henry thanked the couple, walked back to his horse, placed the bacon in one of his new saddlebags and rode off, after closing the front gate behind him.

When he was out of sight of the house, he doubled back through the woods behind it, halting at a vantage point from which he could see the path leading to the gate. He didn't have long to wait. Soon he saw the farmer hitch a team of horses to a large cart and drive off, just as he'd said he would do.

Waiting a quarter of an hour to be on the safe side, Henry dismounted, cocked his pistol and approached the house on foot. Just before he reached the front door it opened and the pretty housewife emerged.
