Anskar remembered nothing of the long ride back to Dorinah, only that he’d been barely conscious when Larson reached his side, and right behind the stablemaster, Vihtor. He expected to be chastised, but instead the Seneschal showed only relief. He insisted on carrying Anskar down the hillside and laying him across Uhtran’s saddle. The musky scent of the great destrier was instantly comforting, and Anskar drifted in and out of consciousness as Vihtor walked ahead leading Uhtran by the reins.

Next thing he recalled was waking in his room at Branil’s Burg, warm beneath fresh sheets, a bowl of steaming broth beside him on the nightstand, and Vihtor once more in the chair at the foot of the bed.

“Welcome back,” the Seneschal said. “I was beginning to wonder if you’d started the long slide into the realm of the dead.”

Impressions swarmed through Anskar’s bleary mind: the hooded wraithe; the golden-eyed crow; the statue of a queen; an unearthly shriek; fetid breath slamming into him from behind. He grasped his right forearm, expecting—hoping—to feel bare flesh; but his fingers encountered the hard, cold surface of the vambrace.

Vihtor narrowed his eyes. “Are you injured? Did you hurt your wrist?”

“No,” Anskar said. “Yes, a little.” He winced at the lie but Vihtor would have assumed it was from the pain. “I sprained it when I slipped over.”

“Should I summon a healer?”

“There’s no need,” Anskar said. “It’s not too bad now.”

“You remember much of anything?”

“I remember lightning and rain.”

“Soon passed,” Vihtor said. “The journey home was almost pleasant. You have no recollection of us camping beneath the stars and Larson’s caterwauling?”

“None,” Anskar said. “Larson sang?”

“In a manner of speaking,” Vihtor said with a chuckle. “Until Rosie barked at him to shut up.”
