From his vantage point by the kitchen window, Ty saw Quinn with Lana. When she reached out a hand to pull him back, Ty’s stomach clenched in unison with his jaw. But it was the way she wrapped her arms around her middle and hung her head that had him racing for the back door.

He met Quinn as he was entering.

“What did you say to Lana? Why is she crying?”

His brother looked startled at first. When he looked over his shoulder, a deep frown creased his forehead.

Ty followed his gaze and saw Lana’s hunched back as she went into the guesthouse. “Why is she upset?”

Something like regret flashed in Quinn’s eyes, and he sighed.

The pregnant pause made Ty wonder if his brother wasn’t trying to warn Lana off, as he’d done to him a few days earlier. “Quinn, I’m waiting for an answer.”

“I heard shouting and went to check on her mother. Lana told me Marian’s in the beginning stages of dementia and today’s been an especially bad day.” Quinn rubbed the back of his neck before he shook his head. “I sat and conversed with her to take the attention off of Lana. It appears her mother doesn’t like her very much.”

A large amount of Ty’s unease dissipated. “Yeah. Marian’s a piece of work. The fact Lana and Liam take care of her and don’t dump her in a home speaks well of them. I should go check on Lana.”

“Marian just went down for a nap. Give Lana some quiet time to decompress.”

It went against Ty’s nature not to rush right over, but he saw the wisdom in Quinn’s words. There was time enough to speak to Lana later. “Okay. Let’s have a beer, and I’ll help you run lines.”
