Chapter 31
I turned back and looked at Kamal as he jogged off. I shook my head. I thought about what he just said. I shook my head again. I looked back at him from a distance. I shook my head one last time as I gathered myself and started to walk back to my room.
“Tell Dedrick I said hi. Tell him to get at me sometimes. Tell him he doesn’t have to be a stranger. We’re teammates, you know…you know.”
Why did he emphasize you know, the second time he said it? Was he trying to insinuate that he and Dedrick have something going on? Nah, that couldn’t be it. When I asked Dedrick a long time ago if he and Kamal had something going on, he told me no. I believe Dedrick; I don’t trust Kamal.
I appreciate the kind words he just relayed to me, but I just don’t trust him. He’s sneaky. I don’t know how he knows, but he knows that I have something going on with Dedrick. A lot of the things he has said over the past semester suggest that. From the way he pops up at different events when I’m with Dedrick, to the way he does stuff, makes me wonder about him. Kamal is a snake and cannot be trusted. However, he is graduating this weekend and soon he will be the least of my worries. I’ll probably never see the man again so I’m not going to let him infect my mind with such foolishness. Besides, he really could be talking about something as simple as basketball.
When I got back to the room, Serge still wasn’t there. I shook my head as I thought about his loss. God forbid if that were Tyler or someone I loved. I don’t know what I would do.
I picked up my phone to call Dedrick, but then remembered that he said that he was doing something important and he would call me when he was done.
I thought about Kamal. Dedrick.
“Ok, CJ, you’re tripping!”
I could hear Dedrick saying, “I promise you, I’ve never did anything with that dude.”
Deep breath. Breathe deep. Exhale. Calm down, Clinton. Calm down.
I could feel the vibration of my phone. Immediately, I thought—and wished—it was Dedrick calling me. However, when I looked at the phone, it wasn’t Dedrick—it was Tyler.
“What’s up, man,” I sat down on the bed.
“Shit, CJ. What’s the deal?”
“Nothing really. Just finished my last final for the year.”
“That’s what’s up.”
“Yeah,” I said, as I saw Dedrick’s face again.
“I can’t wait until we back in da Chi,” he said, in reference to Chicago.
“Yeah, me, too.”
“Have you fucked him yet?” Tyler asked.
“Huh?”
“Nigga, I told you the other day how to properly clean your ass. Have you done it yet?”
“No,” I said, as an image of Dedrick and Kamal fucking appeared before me.
“What’s bothering you?” he asked.
“Huh?”
“What’s wrong with you?”
“Ain’t nothing wrong with me,” I stood up and walked over to the room door.
“Don’t be lying to me, nigga. I can hear it in your voice that something is wrong.
