Chapter 26
Pushing Boundaries
There was a definite chill in the air, making me wish I’d chosen something more than the short leather jacket and matching pants I wore. Claudius, beside me in a thick-sweater and jeans, didn’t seem bothered by the cold in the least bit. We watched in silence from a spot across the street as every species in Falls Creek filed inside the Temptation Club. Technically, only the representatives for each class of supernatural attended Council meetings. For reasons unbeknown to me, Hirohito—or maybe it was Ashmedai—deemed it necessary to open up the special session to everyone in the community.
I crossed my arms and scowled. When I reset the town, I only envisioned a good outcome—like all the ones before it. Through the decades, Falls Creek required a cleansing. Otherworldly creatures forgot their place from time to time. Humans would occasionally try to outwit us. Whenever that happened, I hit the do-over button. When I set the course of events into motion, I never considered a bad result.
Wasn’t that the same excuse you used with the Black Plague, witch?
One would think that I would have learned from that incident. Alas, I did not. Rather, I kept going. Always pushing the boundaries of common decency. With the situation at hand, however, I wanted to run in the opposite direction. I was tempted to do it even at that juncture. It might have been why I kept inching away from Claudius.
“Hey, Red.” It was a simple statement full of implication. Claudius knew what I was up to, and he didn’t want me to leave. He slipped his hand around mine, instantly dwarfing it. “I’m not going anywhere, and neither are you. We’ll face this together.”
Together—it was a concept that I was slowly growing accustomed to.
But, deep down I wanted to argue the matter because that was ingrained within me—to debate a problem until I got my way.
Frankly, I didn’t deserve anyone’s help, not even Claudius's. At that moment I wanted to wallow in self-pity. It was easier that way. The residents—human and otherwise—knew me as a disagreeable bitch who made decisions based on what was best for me, not them. Couldn’t I just keep doing that?
No, you can’t, witch. It’s no longer just about you.
Instead of launching into a squabble, I forced a smile. “I know. It’s just—”
He grinned. “You’ll get used to it. Besides that, what else is bothering you?”
“This was supposed to be a meeting for Council only. Why did Ashmedai invite everyone?”
“I told you that my father is a chaos demon.” Claudius tugged on my hand, and we crossed the road, headed for the club. “Having this many supernaturals in one place guarantees maximum disorder. Remember, he feeds off that shit.”
The sounds of turmoil could be heard from the sidewalk. As I opened the door, the noise increased two-fold. Most of the racket came from Brice, the new alpha for the Night Terror Society. He was in a heated argument with Maeve Highmore. Brice blamed the coven for the mess that was ensuing.
