Don’t let your possessions define you. Although an affluent, prosperous life is highly praised in Western culture, our motivation should be different as followers of Christ. How much or how little we have shouldn’t define our worth, neither should it characterize what we chase after.

I’m not claiming we get this right all the time, but Adrienne and I have held each other accountable over the years to balance what we spend on ourselves with sowing into things of eternal worth—things that don’t benefit us personally or from which we won’t see an earthly reward. We hold on to our possessions lightly, practicing hospitality and generosity. Oftentimes, the Holy Spirit will nudge us to commit to giving toward different ministries or missionaries. We have prayed and asked the Lord to put specific families on our hearts and even specific amounts—and almost every time we have come back thinking the exact same thing, or at least very close.
